In case you’re unaware of the Mom’s Choice Awards, their Awards Honoring Excellence seal is widely recognized as the symbol representing the best in family-friendly media, products and services. Around the world, parents, educators, retailers and the media trust the Mom’s Choice Awards for their product reviews and evaluations. Books 8, 9 and 10 in The Whimsy Wood Series.

‘Fearne Fairy’, ‘Posie Pixie’ and the rest of the woodland folk will be having their very own party in ‘Whimsy Wood’ to celebrate! There’ll be plenty of acorn cups of hot, sweet snowberry juice for everyone for toasting. Posie’s going to make her yummy pixie ‘hokey pokey’ and ‘Mrs Scarlet the squirrel’ will be bringing along some of her infamous crackle crunch cakes! Here at the Whimsy Wood HQ, we didn’t want to miss out on all the celebrating, so we’ll be raising a glass or 2 of the fizzy stuff later!

On that note, I’d better get on and be creative elsewhere before the fuzzy stuff appears! I’ll bid you farewell and wish you a wonderfully whimsical weekend!

Twelfth Night In Whimsy Wood

All manner of exciting things have been happening in Whimsy Wood over the past week or so. There was the grand clear-up in Whimsy Wood, following the rather extravagant New Year’s Eve party thrown by ‘Bromley Badger’! As you will probably know, Bromley is Whimsy Wood’s party-animal! Whenever he appears in Whimsy Wood, he’s usually going to or coming home from a party of some sort and he’s normally got a party balloon tied about himself and a party hat askew on his head!

Then ‘Twelfth Night’ arrived, perhaps too quickly for some unprepared woodland folk and it was quite a dash and a scrabble to ensure everyone had taken their Christmas decorations down and tidied things away in Whimsy Wood, before January the 6th was over! In fact, Fearne Fairy’s ‘Great Aunt Flora’ and Posie Pixie’s ‘Nanny Pip’ came and lent a hand or two, as there were so many decorations to put away!

‘Mrs Spottisdowne the sparrow’ had got completely carried away this Christmas and had sewn garland upon garland of holly and ivy sprigs. These had been strung up amongst the oak and ash trees in Whimsy Wood and Fearne Fairy had applied a special wintry spell, which ensured they glistened and glimmered as though they were permanently touched by frost. The effect was stunning. Nevertheless, it took a fair amount of time taking them down again!

Needless to say that the woodland folk are worn out now by their New Year and Twelfth Night shenanigans! So much so that most of them have decided to choose ‘going to bed early’ as their New Year’s resolutions! ‘Finlay Fairy’ is already tucked up cosy and warm in his bed tonight, having had an acorn cup of steaming hot snowberry juice and read a fairy story before going to sleep!

On that note, I shall bid you farewell and wish you a wonderfully whimsical weekend.

Whimsy Wood’s Festive Spell

We’ll I don’t know about you, but my family and I really had the most wonderful Christmas! We were fortunate enough to travel to Lapland before Christmas and meet the one and only real-life Santa in person!

Santa's actual house in Lapland!

Magical, amazing, enchanting barely describe accurately this truly once-in-a-lifetime trip! Even ‘Posie Pixie’ came along! Well she just couldn’t bare to miss out on all the fun!

As a writer, this wintry adventure was also a wonderful source of creative inspiration and has helped renew and invigorate my ‘story bank’ for future Whimsy Wood tales.

In the world of ‘Whimsy Wood’ itself, you’ll be relieved to know that ‘Posie Pixie’ did manage to get her Christmas tree up and decorated in time for the festive celebrations! With the help of her furry friend ‘Florence Fox’!

As you can imagine, ‘Whimsy Wood’ was a hive of activity over the festive spell, with carol singing from Mr and Mrs Dusty the dormice and their 6 children. Then there was a huge get together on Christmas Eve night in the big glade within the wood, where all the ‘Whimsy Wood’ folk exchanged their presents to one another. A drop or two of mulled snowberry wine was consumed of course and plenty of snowberry pies were eaten at this annual Christmas Eve get together.

Whimsy Wood's carol-singing dormice!

Whimsy Wood’s carol-singing dormice!

Dr Tustle the tawny owl wasn’t too busy over the festive spell which was a relief. He just needed to visit Dillon and Dingle, Mr and Mrs Dusty the dormice’s twin boys on Christmas Day morning, as they’d sprained their tails from hanging upside down off the Dustys’ Christmas tree! Mrs Dusty was not pleased with them I can tell you!

Mr Bilberry the blackbird, Whimsy Wood’s trusty postman, was thankful for the extra bank holidays over the festive spell! Poor fella was worn out with delivering leaf letters, cards and parcels! Mr Bilberry did think to himself that it’s no wonder Santa delivers presents on one night only each year!

Well that’s all from me and the Whimsy Wood folk for now. I’ll bring you some more news from the world of Whimsy Wood soon. For now we’d like to wish you all a wonderfully whimsical New Year!

Could The Award-Winning ‘Whimsy Wood’ Children’s Books Become An Animated Series?

I must apologise for my absence from writing regular posts here on the ‘Whimsy Wood’ blog. The past 3 weeks or so have been incredibly busy and extremely exciting to say the least! Firstly we had the launch of the 10th ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s book, titled ‘Fearne Fairy And The Landing Lesson’, which was on Saturday November the 26th, at the Sidmouth Street Christmas Festival in Devizes.

The exciting launch of 'Fearne Fairy And The Landing Lesson'!

Then we’ve had numerous Christmas Fairs where my ‘Whimsy Wood’ books and I, have been fortunate enough to have our own stand, to sign copies of the books for ‘Whimsy Wood’ fans. Our last fair of the festive season is this evening at Rowde Academy in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Whimsy Wood author Sarah Hill will be signing copies of her award-winning children's books at this Christmas Fayre!

Finally, I can now tell you that my ‘Whimsy Wood’ books have received huge interest from a London agency, who will be pitching my series and concept to TV networks from the middle of next week! This has meant that I’ve needed to rewrite the 1st 14 books as episodes for TV, which has taken me a fair bit of time and thought, but I’m delighted to say that they are all done and that body of work has now left my inbox! I shall keep my fingers, toes and everything else that I possess crossed and pray for some wonderfully whimsical news before Christmas!

Poppies, Peace And Nursery Rhymes

Today of course is Remembrance Day. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, please take a moment to step back from the constant rushing around that has become modern day life and remember all those who sacrificed their lives to keep us safe and to give us the wonderful world that we have today. 🌹

Remember this day, for now and always. 🌹

Remember this day, for now and always. 🌹

Now, did you know, that alongside the intriguing American events this week, its actually been Nationl Nursery Rhyme Week here in the U.K.?! Now that’s something cheerier to focus on. 😊 Nursery rhymes are hugely important in early childhood, as they help children master key skills such as language and communication and social, physical and emotional skills. Not only that, but singing, whether on your own or in a group of people, is great for the soul. It makes you feel good, no matter how young or old you are. Just like reading with your child, singing fun songs and nursery rhymes with your wee one, creates closeness and a feeling of unity. So what are you waiting for? If you’re stuck for nursery rhyme ideas, then these ones are pretty good to get you started :- ‘Doctor Foster’, ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’, ‘Two Little Dickie Birds’, ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’.

Let's Get Singing Everyone! 😃🎤

There’s Always A ‘First’ For Everything!

I’m a firm believer in ‘shaking things up’ a bit and not doing the same old thing in the same old way. This week is no different because in the world of ‘Whimsy Wood’, we have not just one, but two new things going on! The first of these things being a Skype visit to a Brownie Unit, the First Gisburn Brownie Unit to be precise! While the second of these exciting events is a ‘Whimsy Wood’ book being entered into the 2016 Goodreads Choice Awards.

Please vote for 'Fearne Fairy And The Dandelion Clocks'! 😃📚✨

Please vote for ‘Fearne Fairy And The Dandelion Clocks’! 😃📚✨

Now I have done author Skype visits before. In fact I was fortunate enough to be part of an educational program called ‘Adventure ’15’ last November. Thousands of schools across the world took part and I was invited to visit a number of schools in America, Canada and the UK via Skype! It was tonnes of fun and wonderful to be asked so many different questions about being an author and the process of writing from so many different children. I have never had a Skype visit, or indeed a normal author visit, with a Brownie Unit before and I’m really looking forward to it! The First Gisburn Brownies are based up in Lancashire and since I live in Wiltshire, a Skype visit seemed a great plan. These Brownies are working towards their ‘Creative Writing’ badge and they would like to discuss character creation, which will be heaps of fun! Our Skype session is arranged for Tuesday November the 8th, so I’ll let you know what questions they ask me and what ideas they have about creating their own literary characters! 😃

The second new thing this week is ‘Fearne Fairy And The Dandelion Clocks’, my 8th ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s book, being entered into the 2016 Goodreads Choice Awards! Now various ‘Whimsy Wood’ books have been in various literary competitions and book awards, but we haven’t had a ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s book entered into a competition where the winners are chosen by public vote! So if you like ‘Fearne Fairy And The Dandelion Clocks’ then please click on this link:- https://www.goodreads.com/choiceawards/best-childrens-books-2016 This 8th ‘Whimsy Wood’ book is in the ‘Middle Grade-Children’s’ category. Once you click on the link, scroll to the the search bar at the bottom of the page and type ‘Fearne Fairy And The Dandelion Clocks’ in. It’s pink front cover will come up. Click on that and ‘vote’ will appear for you to click on. Thanks heaps in advance for this. All of us at Whimsy Wood HQ really appreciate your support. 😉😃📚✨

An Amazing Literary Award For The Whimsy Wood Series !

Hi there and a happy half-term to you all!
I’m delighted to inform you that I received an international literary award in Las Vegas on Friday October the 14th! My 4th ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s book, titled ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’, won the Chapter Book category in the sixth annual international Children’s Literary Classics Book Awards!

My husband and I flew out to Las Vegas to attend the winning authors’ round table dinner on Thursday October the 13th, the official black tie awards ceremony on Friday October the 14th and then the Vegas Valley Book Festival yesterday (Oct 15th) . My ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s series and I had our own stand at this highly prestigious book festival in Las Vegas for ‘Whimsy Wood’ book signings and readings.

Reading 'Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party' to the children at the Vegas Valley Book Festival!

Reading ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’ to the children at the Vegas Valley Book Festival!

This is the biggest business trip so far that my woodland children’s books and I have been on. I first discovered that my 4th ‘Whimsy Wood’ book, ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’, had won the Chapter Book category in the Literary Classics Book Awards back in July. I must admit I was in a state of disbelief, shock and euphoria for a fair few weeks following that winning confirmation email! I had to keep re-reading the email and double-checking my inbox to ensure I hadn’t dreamt it!

On the run-up to the awards ceremony and the Vegas Valley Book Festival, I felt incredibly excited and nervous. I was a jittery jumble of emotions! I hasten to add that I don’t like flying, so the prospect of a 10 hour flight from England to Las Vegas, only added to the sweaty-palmed, heart-racing physical expression of my own emotions!

Receiving the winning award for the Chapter Book category out in Las Vegas was just out of this world! I have never attended any sort of red carpet event in my life, nor have I been part of such a huge literary festival. The Vegas Valley Book Festival took place the day after the Literary Classics awards ceremony and had over 10,000 people attending! I felt incredibly privileged to be part of the Literary Classics Book Awards and the Vegas Valley Book Festival. Experiences that will remain engraved in my memory forever.

'Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party' wins the Chapter Book category at the Literary Classics Book Awards in Las Vegas!

‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’ wins the Chapter Book category at the Literary Classics Book Awards in Las Vegas!

My husband and I celebrated Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’s win at the party thrown by Literary Classics, after the awards ceremony in Las Vegas on Friday October the 15th! We also took advantage of being in Las Vegas and celebrated further by seeing Cirque Du Soleil’s ‘O’ at The Bellagio. This has to be the most amazing show I have ever seen. Phenomenal. Jaw-dropping. Mind-blowing!

The success of my ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s series would not of course be possible without Abela Publishing, our editor Sarah O’Gorman, social media mogul Sarah Varley and our incredible illustrator Sarah Mauchline. These 3 Sarahs plus myself, make up ‘Team Sarah’ within the ‘Whimsy Wood’ team!

Sarah Mauchline was one of Abela Publishing’s illustrators when I was first taken on by this publishing house back in January 2013. She has a medical background, like myself (she was a nurse and I am a Vet) as well as a background in graphic design. We also both have 3 young children and I think these similarities are some of the many reasons why we have such a wonderful working relationship and indeed friendship.

Each ‘Whimsy Wood’ manuscript has to be broken down into 15 illustrations plus a front cover illustration. I then need to work out what illustrations I need for that particular book and give Sarah as detailed a description for those illustrations that I can. Within 2 or 3 sketches tops, she’s drawn exactly what I had imagined in my head! Now that to me is phenomenal! Added to that, the crazy fact that we have never met in person! Sarah lives up in Aberdeen while I am in Wiltshire, so all our correspondence is via email or Facebook messenger. I think I can safely say that we are very fortunate to have such a connection and I feel honoured to be working with such a talented lady.

To give you a bit of background regarding my stories, there are 35 books in my ‘Whimsy Wood’ series for 5-8 year olds and these are divided into 5 sets each containing 7 books. Please note that not all 35 of my ‘Whimsy Wood’ books are available yet. This is because book 1, ‘Posie Pixie And The Copper Kettle’, was published back in July 2013 and the publisher of my Whimsy Wood series (Abela Publishing), wishes to release 3 titles from my series each year. Book 9, ‘Fearne Fairy And The Chocolate Caterpillar’, was launched on July the 2nd and book 10, ‘Fearne Fairy And The Landing Lesson’, is due to be released on November the 26th.

Each woodland story is written for a specific month in the calendar, so the flora and fauna within Whimsy Wood change as you read through the series. One of the subtle aims of my series is to help children become more aware of the wonderful nature that we have all around us. There is also an incomplete map of Whimsy Wood at the back of every book. The map is incomplete, because we wanted children to use their imagination to fill in the map, along with what they have learned from the story that they’ve just read.

I’m very fortunate to be able to say that my series is ‘award-winning’. This is because the 1st 5 books were all awarded the U.S. Readers’ Favourite 5-star seal. Books 6 and 7 (‘Posie Pixie And The Snowstorm’ and ‘Posie Pixie And The Pancakes’) were tied winners in The Royal Dragonfly Book Awards and book 4, ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’, won the Chapter Book category in the Literary Classics Book Awards on Friday night.

Well that’s all from me for this week. I shall bid you farewell and wish you all a wonderfully whimsical weekend,

Sarah Hill, children’s author and creator of The Whimsy Wood Series,

An Exciting Week Of Preparation, Planning And Soon-To-Be Partying!

All manner of things have been happening in ‘Whimsy Wood’ recently. ‘Mrs Scarlet the squirrel’ has been celebrating ‘Red Squirrel Week’, with the rest of the Scarlet family. They had a particularly splendid party and invited all of the Whimsy Wood folk. They played ‘pin the tail on the squirrel’ and ‘find the nut’, amongst other well known squirrel games! ‘Bromley Badger’ (Whimsy Wood’s very own party animal!) ate one too many acorns and ‘Dr Tustle the tawny owl’ had to pay him a special visit in the middle night, to give Bromley some medicine for his dicky tum!

It's been Red Squirrel Week!

It’s been Red Squirrel Week!

After the red squirrel party, ‘Humbug Hedgehog’ decided that it was about time to prepare for his annual ‘big sleep’. He’s been busy stuffing his prickly chops with snails, slugs and worms and he’s found a particularly snug lime log that he plans to hibernate in very soon. In between mouthfuls of invertebrates, he’s been filling this log with leaves to keep him nice and toasty during the winter months. If you have your very own Humbug in your garden and would like to know what you can do to help this spiky creature prepare for hibernation, then please click on this link and read the RSPCA’s great advice :- http://goo.gl/QTU9y0

'Humbug Hedgehog' is busy preparing for hibernation in 'Whimsy Wood'. 😊

‘Humbug Hedgehog’ is busy preparing for hibernation in ‘Whimsy Wood’. 😊

The Whimsy Wood team have also been busy preparing…..not for hibernation, but for something just as big…. In a few days, ‘Posie Pixie’ and I (and hubby Matt of course!) will be jetting off to Las Vegas to attend the 2016 Literary Classics Book Awards! I can barely believe this is happening! I am now a jumble of excitement and nerves! This is certainly the biggest adventure that my Whimsy Wood Series and I have ever been on so far and I can’t wait to receive the winning Chapter Book Award! The Whimsy Wood book that won this category is book 4, ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’.

The Whimsy Wood Series is off on its biggest adventure yet! 😃📚✨

The Whimsy Wood Series is off on its biggest adventure yet! 😃📚✨

I’ve been busy reading this November story out loud to my own 3 children and reminding myself of all the characters’ voices, ready for the reading of ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’ that I’ve been asked to do at the Vegas Valley Book Festival this coming Saturday! Woohoo!

We're beyond excited!

We’re beyond excited!

The planning and preparation hasn’t stopped there! Oh no! I’ve also been getting myself organised for some Whimsy Wood craft activities that Devizes Books have kindly asked me to do, on Saturday October the 22nd as part of Devizes Book Festival. If you’re in and around this delightful market town of Devizes in Wiltshire on that afternoon, then come along and join in!

What Happens After A ‘Whimsy Wood’ Book Is Launched ?

EFolk often ask often ask what I do after a new ‘Whimsy Wood’ book has been published to raise its profile and help in its promotion. The most recent ‘Whimsy Wood’ children’s book is ‘Fearne Fairy And The Chocolate Caterpillar’, and this was launched on Saturday July the 2nd. In the past, we’ve held book launches in various book shops within the beautiful county of Wiltshire that I live in. For example, book 7, ‘Posie Pixie And The Pancakes’, was launched in The White Horse Book Shop in Marlborough, Wiltshire, in June last year.

Launch of 'Posie Pixie And The Pancakes' at the White Horse Book Shop

Launch of ‘Posie Pixie And The Pancakes’ at the White Horse Book Shop

However, we decided to launch book 9 online on the Whimsy Wood Facebook page https://goo.gl/uRQqr6 To celebrate this launch, we ran a competition from Saturday June the 25th until the official launch date of July the 2nd. The competition was to make, bake or create a chocolate caterpillar cake and then send the image of this chocolatey extravaganza to the Whimsy Wood Facebook page. Well, we had some fabulous entries, but in the end we managed to choose 2 wonderful winners, who received signed copies of this latest chocolatey instalment from my Whimsy Wood Series!

A number of book bloggers and reviewers had received advance review copies (ARCs) of ‘Fearne Fairy And The Chocolate Caterpillar’, via Authoramp who Abela Publishing use for promotional purposes. These bloggers and reviewers were invited to send their reviews to the Whimsy Wood Facebook page, on the official launch day of this 9th Whimsy Wood book. Here are the links to a few of the reviews :-

Also, before the official launch date of ‘Fearne Fairy And The Chocolate Caterpillar’, Authoramp sent out a press release to national newspapers and posted it on their blog:- http://www.authoramp.com/2016/07/1956/ This press release I emailed to local newspapers and they kindly printed a piece about this launch and the incredibly exciting news that book 4, ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’, has won the Chapter Book category in the international Children’s Literary Classics Book Awards!

Following the successful launch of book 9 on July the 2nd, 5 signed copies of ‘Fearne Fairy And The Chocolate Caterpillar’ winged their way to the Payson Book Festival in Arizona on July the 23rd http://cts.vresp.com/c/?FiveStarPublications/81d5b63bb3/f67bc2cacf/e7a64f72d5 Book 9 will also feature in The Bath Parent magazine, which is distributed to all the schools and libraries in and around the fabulous city of Bath, near to where I live. This parenting magazine actually reviewed and featured book 8, ‘Fearne Fairy And The Dandelion Clocks’, in their previous issue.

Finally, ‘Fearne Fairy And The Chocolate Caterpillar’, featured in the August issue of Wildlife Watch. This is The Wildlife Trusts’ children’s magazine and they ran a competition to win signed copies of this latest enchanting Whimsy Wood book. They also ran a really fun and engaging competition to win signed copies of book 5, ‘Posie Pixie And The Christmas Tree’ last year, so it made perfect sense to agree to a similar competition for book 9 this year.

In the past, following a book launch, Abela Publishing have set up offers on their website, such as free Whimsy Wood colouring sheets and a free ebook for customers purchasing the latest Whimsy Wood book. We have also held Whimsy Wood book signings and I am often invited to local school and community fairs to have a Whimsy Wood stand.

Finally, to aid promotion of my Whimsy Wood Series, my books have been submitted to various book competitions and award schemes and this, along with the other promotional activities above, is something I would highly recommend. For example, the 1st 5 of my Whimsy Wood books have all been awarded the sought-after 5 Star Seal from The Readers Favourite.

Books 6 and 7, ‘Posie Pixie And The Snowstorm’ and ‘Posie Pixie And The Pancakes’, were tied winners in The Royal Dragonfly Book Awards. These books also gained the Story Monster Approved Seal. As mentioned earlier, book 4, ‘Posie Pixie And The Fireworks Party’, has very recently won the Chapter Book category in the international Children’s Literary Classics Book Awards and all these medals, wins and achievements help to raise your profile as an author and raise awareness of your precious literary creations.

One other thing I really like to do following publication of a new Whimsy Wood book, is to donate copies to local libraries and schools. At the end of the day, your book should be available to everyone, whatever their background or amount of money that they have in their pocket.

Well, I’d better go and be creative elsewhere, so I shall bid you farewell and wish you a wonderfully whimsical weekend!
